Two day visit of  MBA-I students at Adani Port, Mundra
Date of Visit: 29th -30th September, 2019

68 students of MBA-I, along with 4 faculty members visited Adani Port at Mundra on 29th and 30th September, 2019, as part of Industrial visit organized by the College.

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ) is promoted by Adani Group, one of India’s largest business conglomerates. The US$11 bn Group has interests across resources -coal mining and trading; logistics- ports and logistics, shipping and rail; energy - renewable, thermal power generation and transmission; agro commodities and ancillary industries.

Their ten strategically located ports and terminals represent 24% of the country’s port capacity, handling cargo of vast hinterland, demonstrating that when it comes to servicing core national needs, Adani Ports is prepared with scale, scope and speed.

Mundra Port is a deep draft, all-weather port that is today the largest commercial port of India with a high degree of mechanisation. In fact, it is the only port in the country with handling and storage facilities for crude oil, containers, dry bulk, break bulk, automobiles and liquid cargo. Mundra can berth the largest post panamax vessel and can handle four million TEUs or Twenty feet Equivalent Unit.

After completing the visit to South Basin, the students visited the  Adani Wilmar facility at Mundra. Adani Wilmar Limited (AWL) is a joint venture incorporated in January 1999 between Adani Group Conglomerate, the leaders in International trading & Private Infrastructure and Wilmar International Ltd. - Singapore, Asia's leading Agri-business group. AWL owns more than 40 units that cumulatively translate to a refining capacity of over 19000 tonnes per day, seed crushing capacity of 9000 tonnes per day and packaging capacity of 12900 tonnes per day.

After returning from the visit to these two industries, students had their tea, and were given a free time till 20:00 hrs. After completing our dinner, instead of the scheduled cultural activities, students chose to play kho kho in the common lawn with some entertaining presentation at the end of play.

The next day, 14th March, after an energetic start of one hour of yoga, meditation and laughing exercises in the morning, we had our breakfast at 8:00 AM.  After breakfast   we visited West Basin of Adani Port and Adani Power Plant.

The current handling capacity of west port is 60 MMT of coal per annum.  Recently, West Basin terminal, Asia’s largest coal import facility, surpassed the last recorded best coal discharge performance nationally of 122,247 metric tonnes and further surpassed its own record of 115,119 metric tonnes of 2012. This is a great milestone for Mundra port and the credit goes to their state of the art mechanized automated safe facilities and to their young employees who have toiled day and night to ensure that West Basin emerges as the best coal import terminal in the world. It is designed to handle coal that can feed most of the Indian power plants and therefore play an important role in the country’s power generation.

The Mundra power project is also the fastest project implementation ever by any power developer in the country with a record completion of inception to synchronisation within 36 months. Phase III of the Mundra Project, which is based on supercritical technology, has received ‘Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Project’ certification from United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This is the world’s first thermal project based on supercritical technology to get registered as a CDM Project under UNFCCC Largest private Thermal power station in India at a single location.

It is the First super critical unit in India with 100% raw water source is sea water for entire station and Single high speed conveyor from port to plant. It is first & longest private sector HVDC system in India., 500 KV Bipolar HVDC from Mundra to Mohindergarh and 1st High Voltage Direct Current power transmission system in the world, to have been registered under Clean Development Mechanism.

After returning from these visits, the students had their group photographs and a quick lunch in succession. Feedback forms were filled by selected students and our group departed the guest house at 13:30 hrs for our trip back to Maninagar.  We reached Maninagar railway station at 11:00 pm with two brief stopovers. From Maninagar, we boarded our train to Bharuch.

Our group reached Bharuch railway station on 1st October, 2019, Tuesday 5:00 hrs. All the students enjoyed and had a great learning experience which will be helpful to them in their first and second semester subjects, especially Production and Operations Management and Export Import Management.
