A  REPORT OF THE SESSION ON BUSINESS ETHICS AND CORPORATE GOVERNANCE AT THE TWO DAY
FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME AT GUJARAT TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY

DATE : 26/09/2018, WEDNESDAY, 11:00 TO 13:00 HRS
RESOURCE PERSONS: DR. SIDDHARTHA DAS AND DR. SHAKINA MUNSHI
VENUE : HALL A0, GTU, CHANDKHEDA, AHMEDABAD

Dr. Siddharth Das began the session with an introduction of the concept of ethics and various levels at which the discussion can be had with the students. He underlined the importance of business ethics in the coming time with lot of statistics and data from international research studies.

He reflected on the fact that this is a subject which is based on philosophy and metaphysics so it becomes very essential to clarify all the concepts that are discussed in the subject.  He also stressed the fact that faculty members will have to take an active interest in reading various topics and understanding themselves first hand and then making the students understand the concepts.

Dr. Shakina Munshi began her session with the emphatic assertion that ethics is a subject of the soul and hence it can only be understood by having a deep connection with oneself first. She outlined the entire course content of all the four modules and how each topic can be dealt with in the class either by discussion, role plays, external visits and lecturing.

After the completion of the sessions by the resource persons, the students had a good discussion about whether this subject should be part of semester one or semester four. Majority of the faculty members felt that it was better if this subject is placed in the fourth semester.

There was healthy discussion among the faculty members about various difficult concepts like difference between ‘ethics’ and ‘morality’ and ‘values’.

Overall the session was appreciated by all concerned and all the participants felt the need of more such sessions in future.
